What We Do
The apostle Paul wrote: “The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching.” - 1 Timothy 5:17 (NIV)
Unfortunately, most Pastors are not honored with financial security. Study after study finds that most Pastors face significant personal financial stress.
When asked to specify the issues causing their financial concerns, an overwhelming majority of Pastors cite a lack of savings to meet life’s major expenses (e.g., retirement, medical, college tuition) and a lack of emergency funds. For most employees in the United States, these expenses are met through participation in employee benefit plans and/or an accumulation of personal savings. However, most Pastors are not offered retirement or health benefits from their churches, and very few are compensated well enough to afford significant savings.
The financial burdens carried by Pastors often inhibit the fruitfulness and effectiveness of their ministries, stress their marriages and families, and degrade their physical and mental well-being. The chronic financial challenges faced by most Pastors causes a significant number of Pastors to leave the ministry, while often discouraging others from pursuing the vocation.
Double Honor helps Pastors achieve long-term financial stability by helping to bear their financial burdens. We sow savings alongside them today to grow a future harvest sufficient to meet their major life expenses.
Double Honor’s activities include:
Providing renewable grants to Pastors in financial need. We help Pastors to gain long-term financial stability through our Sowing Savings Program, a program that provides a dollar-for-dollar match of a Pastor’s personal contributions to his or her own investment savings account.
Increasing public awareness of Pastors’ financial struggles. Through presentations and publications, we endeavor to educate the public (particularly evangelical Christians) as to the financial realities that Pastors face, why it matters, and how they can help.
Equipping Pastors with financial “know-how”. We provide educational materials to Pastors related to finances, long-term investing and the building of savings.
By coming alongside Pastors to ease their financial burdens:
• The Church is strengthened
• Pastors can serve more faithfully, fruitfully and joyfully
• Individual churches are better able to attract and retain pastors
• Seminarians can look to the future with financial confidence and hope
• The wider community benefits from thriving local churches and the many services they provide
